In this article we take a look at the role links can play for a website using the example of Registered Training Organisation Medtrain.com.au
Getting Value from Incoming Links
We've all heard of the value of having incoming links to a website for SEO. Where many people mismanage their time and efforts is trying to create links willy-nilly regardless of the website they are linking from. You are much better off getting a few quality incoming links than dozens of low value or insignificant links.
There are a couple of ways you can source new links. As a long term strategy though, the best method would have to be making sure that your website has quality, original content that is worth linking to. If other websites are linking to you because your content is actually worthwhile and original then a lot of the hard work will be done for you.
You may still have to get the message out that you have content worth linking to. Try contributing some articles to industry relevant website or create a blog that has information that will entertain or educate people. Whenever you contribute information online give people a taste of what you have to offer and encourage them to visit your website for the full story.
E.g. So when Medtrain wants to talk about gaining qualifications in administration in the medical industry it can talk about the courses it has available. It could mention areas of study or even just link to the topics covered in the course. The link would be set up as follows - For a course outline of the Certificate 3 Business Administration (Medical) from Medtrain please visit their website.
Where to point the links and what to name them
When you have control over how a link is created then you can do the following:
- Direct it to the most appropriate content on your website (not necessarily the home page)
- Name the link using relevant keywords and don't just link up your web address
- Create unique content around each new link and use different keywords for the link reference
So in the case of Medtrain we can create a link talking about their Medical Terminology Course directly to the relevant page. That's because when someone is looking for a course on medical terminology that is the term that would be most relevant for them when they search. The link does not say click here, or just have the web address but relevant useful words.
What about outgoing links - Should you have them?
If they offer value for your customers then yes, add them in. At the end of the day you want your customers to have a positive experience when they visit your website. If you give visitors to your site quick access to information that is useful to them they will be more inclined to visit your site again.
Obviously you need to show some discretion as to where you create your links - reputable sites only of course. In the case of Medtrain there are outgoing links directing visitors to relevant information on legislative requirements.
So that's a brief explanation of using links online. Remember, to design and improve your website to suit your visitors - it's not always just about rankings.
